India’s largest passenger vehicle manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki, has strengthened its export operations in the first two months of FY26, reporting a sharp 50 per cent year-on-year growth in overseas shipments. The company exported 59,130 units during April–May 2025, compared to 39,527 units in the same period last year.

In May 2025 alone, Maruti Suzuki shipped 31,219 vehicles overseas — a staggering 79.7 per cent increase from 17,367 units exported in May 2024. The export surge has helped offset a slowdown in domestic volumes, which fell 2.6 per cent year-on-year for the April–May period. Cumulatively, including exports, the company registered a 5 per cent overall growth in total sales to 359,868 units, up from 342,640 units in the same period last fiscal.
Rahul Bharti, Executive Director, Corporate Affairs at Maruti Suzuki India, attributed the robust export performance to the company’s deliberate strategy of market diversification and reduced dependency on domestic sales. “Our de-risking strategy of pursuing growth in exports has paid off well. It has protected us against the fall in domestic markets,” he stated. Maruti Suzuki is now targeting 400,000 units in exports for FY26 — a milestone that would mark 20 per cent of the company’s total projected sales.
The export drive is anchored by strong demand for models like the Fronx, Baleno, Swift, Dzire, and Jimny. These vehicles have found strong traction in key international markets, including Africa, Chile, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, and notably, Japan — a new market that has quickly become Maruti’s second-largest export destination. “We’re fairly diversified. We’re present in 100 countries around the world,” Bharti said. “Africa, Latin America and Southeast Asia are our big markets… Japan has sprung into a second destination on the back of the Fronx and Jimny.”

The company expects its export market share to rise to 43 per cent this fiscal, inching closer to the symbolic 50 per cent mark — an ambitious benchmark that Maruti is now realistically eyeing as its global strategy gains traction. The manufacturer has also been focusing on increasing the localisation of production for international markets and tailoring models to meet diverse regulatory and consumer needs across regions.
