This gap of almost 10,000 units propelled Mahindra into the third spot, behind Maruti and Hyundai, and ended Tata's long-standing hold on the position.
In September 2024, Mahindra surpassed Tata Motors to become the third-largest car manufacturer in India by sales, marking a significant shift in the domestic automotive landscape. Mahindra sold 51,062 units, achieving a 24 per cent year-on-year growth, while Tata Motors recorded 41,063 units, representing an 8 per cent decline from the same period last year. This sales gap of almost 10,000 units propelled Mahindra into the third spot, behind Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai, and ended Tata's long-standing hold on the position.

Mahindra's impressive growth can be attributed to the strong performance of its popular SUV models, including the Scorpio-N, XUV 700, and the recently updated XUV 3XO, which saw a surge in demand. The company's SUV-centric strategy is paying off, as it continues to dominate the compact and mid-sized SUV market with models like the Scorpio and XUV 700. These vehicles have contributed heavily to Mahindra’s sales volumes, making it a formidable player in the SUV segment.

Maruti Suzuki | 144,962 |
Hyundai | 51,101 |

Tata Motors | 41,063 |
In contrast, Tata Motors struggled with declining sales across its portfolio. The company registered a dip in both its internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicle (EV) segments, with its EV sales falling by 22 per cent. Tata’s new launches, such as the Curvv.ev and the updated Nexon.ev, are yet to make a significant impact. Additionally, challenges in consumer demand and seasonal factors, coupled with high inventory levels, affected Tata's sales performance.

Mahindra is now closing in on Hyundai, missing the second spot by just 39 units in September. If Mahindra can maintain this momentum, especially with new SUV launches and a robust order book, it might soon challenge Hyundai for the number two position in India’s competitive car market.
