Bajaj is set to make history with the launch of India's first commercially available CNG motorcycle this week, on July 5. The official website confirms the exciting news by putting out a poster about the same. Here’s what we know about the bike so far:

Bajaj CNG Motorcycle Mystery Name

Bajaj's Executive Director, Rakesh Sharma, has denied speculation that the CNG Motorcycle will be named ‘Bruzer.’ While sources within the company previously hinted at the Bruzer tag, it appears this was an internal project codename and will not be the final name. The name is expected to be something simple and catchy for the masses to recognise it and have a great recall.

A World First

One of the biggest challenges in developing a CNG motorcycle is safely integrating a gas cylinder on a two-wheeler. Bajaj's solution involves placing the cylinder within the double cradle frame. This is along the length of the bike. The engine will be a sloper configuration thereby opening up space under the tank and keeping the heat away from the CNG tank. It is going to be an air-cooled motor and will be scalable for future models.

3

Bajaj CNG Motorcycle Functional Design

Based on spy shots of the Bajaj CNG Motorcycle, the design is supposed to feature a round headlight. It is possibly expected to be an LED unit. Practical features like hand guards, a headlight cowl, engine crash guards, and a grab rail enhance both utility and aesthetics. Spy shots reveal distinct twin-spoke alloy wheels with tubeless tyres, likely making it to the production version. The other hardware appears basic: a telescopic fork, monoshock suspension, and a front disc brake.

The bike shall have a comfortable, upright riding posture with mid-set footpegs. A single-piece seat sits above the CNG cylinder, positioned beneath a potentially small petrol tank for a dual-fuel option.

4

CNG Cost of running

The CNG engine promises significant reductions in running costs compared to traditional petrol engines. Consider this: if a typical 125cc motorcycle delivers a mileage of around 60 kmpl on petrol (at a price of ₹ 100 per litre), the running cost per kilometre would be ₹ 1.67. With CNG, the running cost per kilometre could potentially be halved, bringing it down to around ₹ 0.80 per kilometre. This translates to substantial savings, especially for riders who cover long distances regularly. Additionally, CNG offers cleaner emissions, promoting environmental responsibility.

6

Familiarity With CNG Over Electric

This motorcycle presents a compelling alternative in the face of rising petrol costs and growing air pollution concerns. With its lower running costs and cleaner emissions, the CNG motorcycle offers a practical and immediate solution for budget-minded riders. This launch comes at a time when fuel prices are a major concern for many consumers. The switch to electric vehicles might not be feasible for everyone due to various factors like initial cost and charging infrastructure. To add to this the range anxiety problem, which does not do the buyers any favour. The Bajaj CNG motorcycle bridges this gap by providing a familiar and affordable option that is relatively kinder to the environment.

Bajaj CNG Motorcycle Competitive Pricing

Bajaj is expected to price this motorcycle competitively, targeting economy buyers. While the official pricing is to come out on July 5, we expect a starting price of around ₹ 90,000. This should place it on par with rivals like the Honda Shine 125 and the Hero Super Splendor while offering much more value.
