Bajaj Auto Promotes Rakesh Sharma to Joint Managing Director Role

Bajaj Auto Limited has officially announced the re-designation and appointment of Rakesh Sharma as the company’s new Joint Managing Director. The decision was approved by the board of directors following a meeting held on May 6, 2026, acting on the specific recommendations of the nomination and remuneration committee.

The new role is set to commence on June 1, 2026, and will continue until March 31, 2029, pending the necessary approval from shareholders.

Sharma is a seasoned veteran within the organisation, having joined Bajaj Auto in October 2007. He initially took on the role of president of international business, where he spent over a decade expanding the company’s global footprint.

His steady ascent within the corporate hierarchy saw him promoted to Chief Commercial Officer in July 2018, followed by his appointment as Executive Director in January 2019. With over forty years of professional experience, Sharma is an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, from where he graduated in 1986.

In his upcoming capacity as Joint Managing Director, Sharma will continue to report to the Managing Director, Rajiv Bajaj. His new responsibilities will see a significant expansion of his portfolio. In addition to his existing business duties, the Digital, Information Technology, and Legal functions will now report directly to him.

The appointment of Sharma is viewed as a strategic move to strengthen the leadership core as the company navigates an evolving market landscape defined by technological shifts and international competition.
