The ‘biggest’ Pulsar will once again be a tech leader, hopefully
A few days back we brought you insights of Bajaj gearing up to launch its ‘biggest’ Pulsar yet, which is likely to be the Pulsar NS400. But that’s not all, Bajaj could be introducing variable valve timing technology on the 400 cc Pulsar. Here’s why:
Bajaj will be using the 373cc single that is still used on the KTM 390 Adventure and RC 390 as well as its own Dominar 400. Now this motor is known for having explosive performance higher up in the rev band with very little drive in the lower revs. One way KTM has decided to solve this issue and make the new 390 Duke a little more approachable is by increasing the stroke by 4 mm and altering the displacement. Bajaj on the other hand is likely to offer another solution.
Variable valve timing is a complex and clever solution to a rather simple problem. We have seen Yamaha make good use of it on the R15 V3 and R15 V4 (as well as on the MT-15s), where the motor does have improved commuting prowess without sacrificing the top end. And Bajaj has similarly worked on a cost effective solution by using an electric motor and a lead screw.
Bajaj’s system is capable of being used on multi-valve, multi-cylinder and, a penchant for Bajaj engines, multi-spark plug motors. The electric motor is used to move the lobe drum on which a single cam profile or more can be fitted. There’s a slider mechanism in place with a three-step slot design so as to smoothly alter the valve positioning.
The Pulsar NS400 is likely to be a heavy bike. Bajaj will continue to use its solid perimeter frame, chunky USD fork and cast swingarm setup, likely sourced from the Dominar but altered to suit this bike. So, for this motor to be singing sweetly at the top, without feeling like too much of a dud in the city while still extracting decent fuel efficiency when you are out on the highway can be balanced out to a great extent by the inclusion of this tech.
Plus, it will also be perhaps the first real sign that the Pulsar is once again a leader when it comes to offering groundbreaking tech to the masses, something that it has failed to do since the first Bajaj Pulsar 220 arrived on to the scene eons ago.
