The company says the four environments can help occupants feel calmer, more focused, more energised, or more engaged, depending on the moment.
In the runup to the September launch of its first-ever all-electric model, the Torcal, Bentley is slowly releasing bits of information that help set the stage for the grand unveiling. The Crewe, England-based luxury carmaker has teased what it’s calling the ‘Curation Engine’, which will allow drivers to choose between four in-cabin environments. These have been designed to match not just different moods, but also emotional states and sensory needs.
According to Bentley, the Curation Engine represents a new extension of the concept of luxury, going beyond comfort to emotional wellbeing and balance. The cabin of the Torcal will be responsive to its occupants’ state of mind, using sensory neuroscience, to make each journey feel “deeply personal”.
The four environments — Bentley Mode, Comfort Mode, Sport Mode, and Refresh Mode — allow drivers to customise multiple aspects of the Torcal’s performance, tuning, and interior, ranging from ambient lighting, sound, and air quality to suspension and 22-way seat adjustment.
The company says the four environments have been developed using sensory neuroscience, and claims this can help occupants feel calmer, more focused, more energised, or more engaged, depending on the moment.
The Curation Engine is accessed using a glass ring placed in the centre of the front console, with Bentley’s signature diamond-cut pattern.
Bentley mode is the default environment, and the company describes it as “the purest expression of the Bentley character”. It’s designed as a balance of comfort and engagement, blending the best of a grand tourer and a sports car. Comfort Mode has soft lighting, and a “digital detox” environment that reduces the content on the car’s screens, allowing occupants to focus more on each other, and the journey ahead.
On the other hand, Sport Mode sharpens the driver’s attention and emphasises their connection with the car, using more immersive audio and visual cues. The cabin is said to feel more purposeful, with driver’s input having immediate effect for more precise reactions.
Refresh Mode will be exclusive to the Torcal, and is for long, luxurious trips. Fresh air is circulated rapidly, lighting is increased, and the cabin becomes more invigorating to fight off fatigue.
Bentley will officially launch the Torcal, which was first teased nearly two years ago, at 7.19 PM GST on September 23. The teaser also seemingly gives us a look at its centre console, showing a curved screen and physical buttons and rollers for functions including climate control, all with Bentley’s signature diamond pattern. The Torcal will also have a “floating” diamond grille on the front. Even the on-screen graphics have been created by passing light through a hand-cut crystal ring with the diamond pattern scattering light while subtle irregularities give the interior a human touch.
Another aspect of luxury is the Torcal’s audio signature. Drivers will feel a sense of immersion thanks to an entirely original engine signature sound, the Bentley Dynamic Symphony, created by engineers and musicians. Rather than just simulating an engine sound, even its own historically significant ones, the company has added audio cues from drums, viola, and bass guitar. While it’s said to evoke the character of a V8, it is also a completely new way to heighten the driver’s experience with a responsive, visceral soundscape.
