Rajasthan’s Shahjahanpur toll plaza ranks second, bringing in ₹378 crore yearly while Uttar Pradesh leads overall state-wise toll collection.
The Bharthana toll plaza on NH-48 in Gujarat has emerged as India’s top revenue-generating toll, collecting ₹472.65 crore in 2023-24, while amassing ₹2,043.81 crore from 2019-20 to 2023-24. Strategically located on an 83.3 km stretch between Vadodara and Bharuch, it handles heavy goods traffic between northern industrial hubs and western ports, making it a key contributor to national toll earnings. Additionally, ten toll plazas across India have amassed nearly ₹14,000 crore over the same period, according to Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) data presented in Lok Sabha.
Nationwide, toll collection has surged, doubling over the last five years to ₹55,882 crore in 2023-24. Rising vehicle numbers, improved highway connectivity, and adopting FASTag technology are factors driving this growth.
Data from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways reveals that among 1,063 toll plazas on India’s national highways, 14 collect over ₹200 crore annually. Rajasthan’s Shahjahanpur toll plaza ranks second, bringing in ₹378 crore yearly. Uttar Pradesh leads overall state-wise toll collection, generating ₹22,914 crore from its 97 plazas over five years. Rajasthan, with the highest number of toll plazas at 156, follows closely, recording ₹20,308 crore.
Currently, around 45,000 km of India’s 1.5 lakh km national highway network—including newly constructed expressways—is tolled. Due to heavy freight movement, plazas situated on highways connecting ports and industrial hubs typically witness the highest collections.
