According Press Information Bureau, these initiatives are set to enhance the safety and performance of EVs in India.
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has introduced new safety norms for e-rickshaws and e-karts, reflecting India's commitment to sustainable transportation and the growing adoption of electric vehicles (EVs).
The new standards, IS 18590: 2024 and IS 18606: 2024, target the powertrain—the essential component of EVs—ensuring it meets stringent safety and performance requirements. These standards also mandate robust and secure batteries, enhancing overall vehicle safety.
Additionally, BIS has rolled out IS 18294: 2023, a standard specifically for e-rickshaws and e-karts, encompassing comprehensive safety measures from construction to functionality. This aims to protect both drivers and passengers, elevating the safety benchmark for these popular modes of transport.
According to a statement from the Press Information Bureau (PIB), these initiatives are set to enhance the safety and performance of EVs in India. It also aims to provide a level playing field for promoting sustainable and eco-friendly transportation options across the country.
