BMW unveiled the Concept Skytop at the 2024 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este and now it is putting it into production, albeit limited to just 50 units. Unfortunately, those of you eyeing to buy the production version of the Skytop are out of luck since all of them are sold out. BMW says the Skytop is a “limited-run small-series model for enthusiasts and collectors”.
The Skytop was put into production after the concept version received a tremendous response at the Concorso d’Eleganza in Italy. The decision to put the Concept Skytop was announced by Adrian van Hooydonk, head of BMW Group Design, at an event in Milan, Italy. Commenting on the demand for the Concept Skytop, Hooydonk said, “The BMW Skytop is a truly exotic design and offers a combination of driving dynamics and elegance at the highest level. To finally be able to announce that this car will be built is like a dream come true. Thank you for the very positive response around the globe and to the passionate team that worked on the project.”
BMW says the Skytop celebrates its history of iconic roadsters like the 507 and Z8. Like the latter, the Skytop is also powered by BMW’s most powerful V8 engine in production currently. The V8 in the Skytop produces 617 bhp and is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission which sends power to all four wheels. The Skytop can do 0-100 kmph in 3.3 seconds (claimed).
The Skytop has the slimmest LED headlamps BMW produces which flank the wide and slim BMW kidney grilles which get illuminated surrounds. Even the taillamps have a very slim design. It also has a long hood and turbine-like alloy wheels. The Skytop has a removable roof finished in leather and a Targa body style. The roof can be stored in a special compartment in the boot.
Inside, the Skytop has the same brown leather as the removable roof panels. It also gets a Bowers and Wilkins as well as a head-up display. However, it doesn’t get BMW’s curved display that does duty in many new BMW models.
