The Vision Neue Klasse X previews the design language for BMW’s upcoming electric SUVs.
After a bunch of teasers, BMW has finally unveiled a new concept vehicle, the Vision Neue Klasse X SUV. The electric concept SUV showcases the brand’s new design language for its upcoming electric SUVs. BMW says the Vision Neue Klasse X will go into series production in 2025 and will be built at its plant in Hungary.
This is the second Vision Neue Klasse concept, the first being the Vision Neue Klasse sedan that was unveiled at the Munich Motor Show in September last year. The Vision Neue Klasse X is likely to be the preview to the next generation of the BMW iX3.
The Vision Neue Klasse X has a very streamlined design, as expected with a concept vehicle. Gone are the huge kidney grilles seen on modern BMW models, the Vision Neue Klasse X sees the return of smaller and thinner kidney grilles as seen on BMWs of old. The lighting elements are similar to the sedan concept shown last year, with two vertically stacked LED DRLs. BMW says the kidney grilles and headlights create a lighting effect that activates when the driver approaches a vehicle and continues inside.
In profile, the Vision Neue Klasse X looks very similar to the BMW XM with big wheels, squared-off wheel arches and muscular proportions. Since it is a concept, BMW has done a good job of integrating the door handles in the window line, something that might not be carried over in the production version. The charging port is located on the right rear fender.
At the back, the Vision Neue Klasse X gets a twin-pod spoiler and BMW’s new 2D logo. The taillamps get a single horizontal element and 10 small vertical elements which BMW says are 3D printed.
Inside, the Vision Neue Klasse X has a very minimalistic interior with only two displays. Front and centre is a large touchscreen that previews the next generation of BMW’s iDrive operating system. Behind the touchscreen is the new iteration of BMW’s digital instrument cluster (called BMW Panoramic Vision) that spans the width of the dashboard. The German marque says this new display will be complemented by a 3D head-up display in the production version of the Vision Neue Klasse X.
As it is a concept, BMW hasn’t divulged much about the powertrain specifications of the Vision Neue Klasse X. It says the concept SUV uses the sixth generation of BMW’s eDrive technology. BMW says that along with improved electric motors, the new eDrive system also gets improved batteries that allow it to use an 800-volt system. With this, the batteries can gain a range of approximately 300 km in around 10 minutes.
BMW also mentioned that the Vision Neue Klasse concepts also have bi-directional charging capabilities. Both concepts now feature vehicle-to-load (V2L), vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and vehicle-to-home (V2H) functions.
Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management, BMW, said, “The Neue Klasse reflects the variety of all the models that customers want today and in the future – from a sporty sedan, with all its derivatives, to modern SAV family.” SAV or Sports Activity Vehicle is BMW speak for a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV).
