The buses are powered by BYD’s Iron-Phosphate batteries, delivering 345 kWh with a 12-year warranty.

Transport for London (TfL) has made a groundbreaking advancement by launching the world’s first all-electric, long-range, zero-emission double-decker buses into revenue service. The inaugural ceremony at London City Hall featured London’s Deputy Mayor of Environment and Energy, Matthew Pencharz, who accepted the first bus from BYD Europe.

“This is a pivotal moment for London,” said Pencharz. “These buses not only reduce running and maintenance costs but also offer zero-emission, zero-tailpipe-pollution benefits, greatly enhancing air quality for Londoners.” TfL will introduce five all-electric double-decker buses on Route 98, known for its high pollution levels, and operated by Metroline on TfL’s behalf.

BYD, the world’s largest electric vehicle manufacturer, supports TfL and Metroline by installing fast-charging equipment at Metroline’s Willesden Bus Garage in north London and providing driver training. The buses, tailored to TfL’s specifications, are over 33 feet long, accommodate 54 seated and 27 standing passengers, and feature air conditioning.

Isbrand Ho from BYD expressed, “We are honoured to collaborate with TfL in deploying these advanced, zero-emission buses. This initiative not only enhances air quality in London but also demonstrates electric buses' feasibility and cost savings. TfL’s leadership sets a precedent for other transport agencies.”

The buses are powered by BYD’s Iron-Phosphate batteries, delivering 345 kWh with a 12-year warranty, the longest available for electric bus batteries. Capable of running over 24 hours and up to 305 km on a single charge, these buses require only four hours for daily recharging. TfL plans to charge the buses overnight using low-cost, off-peak electricity to maximise cost efficiency.
