BYD Sealion 6 plug-in hybrid SUV was spotted testing in India, which has a claimed pure electric range of 110 km.
Chinese automaker BYD could soon expand its Indian portfolio beyond purely electric vehicles. Recent sightings of the Sealion 6 plug-in hybrid SUV on Indian roads suggest that the company is testing the waters for its advanced hybrid technology in the domestic market.
Known globally as the Seal U, this model represents a big departure from the brand's current all electric line up in the country.
The Sealion 6 is powered by the manufacturer's proprietary Dual Mode intelligence technology. This system integrates a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a powerful electric motor and an 18.3 kWh battery. According to international specifications, the vehicle can travel approximately 110 km on electric power alone. When the internal combustion engine and electric motor work in tandem, the total driving range is estimated to be over 1,000 km, effectively addressing the range anxiety often associated with battery powered cars.
In terms of dimensions, the SUV measures around 4.7 metres in length. The exterior design follows the brand's modern aesthetic, while the cabin is expected to feature high end materials and the signature rotating touchscreen infotainment system seen in other models like the Atto 3 and the Seal sedan.
The introduction of a plug-in hybrid would be a strategic move for BYD in India. While the government currently provides more substantial support for pure electric vehicles, the versatility of a plug-in hybrid could appeal to premium buyers looking for long distance capability.
If launched, the Sealion 6 would be the first of its kind for the brand in India. However, the company has not yet provided official confirmation regarding the launch timeline or expected pricing for the local market.
