The Chinese automaker is preparing to expand beyond its EV-only portfolio in India. Industry indications point towards the Sealion 6 DM-i as the brand’s first plug-in hybrid offering for the market.
BYD India is set to make its entry into the plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) segment on June 9, marking a significant shift in the company's India strategy after focusing exclusively on battery-electric vehicles since entering the market. The company has officially confirmed that its upcoming model will feature BYD’s DM-i Super Plug-in Hybrid technology, although it has not yet disclosed the exact vehicle that will debut.
The launch is strategically important for both BYD and the wider Indian new-energy vehicle market. While the company currently sells electric models such as the Atto 3, Seal sedan, Sealion 7 and eMAX 7 in India, a plug-in hybrid offering could help address concerns around charging infrastructure and long-distance usability that continue to influence purchase decisions outside major metropolitan areas.
Industry reports and recent test sightings suggest the most likely candidate is the BYD Sealion 6 DM-i, a mid-size SUV that has been repeatedly spotted testing on Indian roads and was previously showcased at Auto Expo 2025. However, the Atto 2 DM-i remains another possibility, as BYD has not officially confirmed the model name.
At the heart of the upcoming vehicle will be BYD’s DM-i, or Dual Mode-intelligent, hybrid system. The technology combines the company’s Blade Battery with a petrol engine, electric motors, power electronics and energy management software. In typical driving conditions, the system prioritises electric propulsion, while the combustion engine acts as a generator or provides direct drive assistance when required, particularly during longer journeys or higher-speed operation.
Globally, the Sealion 6 is available with a range of powertrain configurations, including naturally aspirated and turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engines paired with battery packs of varying capacities.
Depending on specification, claimed combined driving ranges exceed 1,000 km, positioning the model as a bridge between conventional hybrids and full battery-electric vehicles.
The timing of the launch is noteworthy. India's electrification journey remains uneven, with charging infrastructure concentrated in urban centres and consumer demand increasingly diversifying across EVs, strong hybrids and emerging PHEV technologies. Several manufacturers have expanded their hybrid portfolios in recent years, but the plug-in hybrid segment remains largely untapped in the passenger vehicle market.
For BYD, the June 9 debut represents more than a product launch. It signals an effort to broaden its addressable market by offering a powertrain that combines electric driving capability with the flexibility of conventional refuelling. How Indian consumers respond could influence not only BYD’s future product strategy but also the pace at which other global manufacturers consider introducing plug-in hybrids to the country.
