Latest patent reveals BYD’s debut two-wheeler will be a maxi-scooter.
Chinese automotive giant BYD is gearing up to make its first two-wheeler and like most companies it too is opting to go the scooter route. The company, already a global leader in electric vehicles and the world's second-largest EV battery manufacturer, recently patented images of the upcoming scooter – giving us an idea exactly what to expect.
Starting its design, the patent images showcase a robust maxi-scooter body style that should have quite the commanding road presence. The scooter's styling draws comparisons to the popular Yamaha XMAX or X-Force. Coupled with BYD’s history we can expect some new innovations to be introduced as well.
The image also depicts a mid-mounted motor with a chain drive system. BYD's engineers seem to have opted for a strategic battery placement around the floorboard which should help optimise the centre of gravity. The scooter seems to ride on 14-inch wheels, with the chassis suspended on an upside-down front fork, and twin rear shock absorbers. Radially-mounted brakes are the second highlight. And lastly, the seat looks quite spacious and thoroughly compliments the scooter’s overall design which seems focused toward rider comfort and stability.
BYD's renowned "Blade" battery technology, known for its high performance and longevity, is expected to feature in this scooter as well. However, adapting this technology to meet the unique requirements of a scooter platform may be a challenge. With an electric drivetrain, the overall profile of the scooter looks quite sleek, which helps it distinguish itself from traditional petrol-powered counterparts.
BYD is expected to unveil its first electric maxi-scooter at the EICMA 2024 in Milan, with an initial launch planned for the Chinese market before expanding to select European countries. While it's too early to pinpoint specific competitors, judging by BYD reputation for a performance-oriented, practical mobility, we expect it will compete against 300 cc class maxi-scooters.
