Centre withdraws electric three-wheeler subsidies after achieving 2.9 lakh target under PM e-Drive.

The Central Government has decided to withdraw subsidies for electric three-wheelers after successfully meeting its target under the PM e-Drive scheme, according to a report by The Times of India. The government had set an ambitious goal of supporting 2.9 lakh electric three-wheelers, a target that has now been achieved.

Government officials quoted in the report stated that this decision reflects the growing maturity of the electric three-wheeler segment. Electric vehicles now account for a significant portion of three-wheeler sales across the country, demonstrating the segment's successful transition towards electrification.

Electric vehicle penetration in the three-wheeler segment has reached approximately 32%, which aligns closely with the Centre's original target range of 20-30%. This milestone achievement has prompted the government to step back and encourage states to take a more active role in further promoting electric three-wheelers.

The situation presents a stark contrast with the electric two-wheeler segment, where adoption rates remain considerably lower. EV penetration in the two-wheeler segment currently stands at about 7.5 per cent, indicating that the market is still in its early stages of development. Given the slower adoption rate, government support for electric two-wheelers is expected to continue into the next financial year.

While electric two-wheelers may require continued policy support, the Centre is gradually shifting greater responsibility to state governments. Several states are now considering their own incentive schemes to boost electric vehicle adoption within their respective jurisdictions. This decentralised approach aims to leverage regional strengths and address state-specific challenges in promoting electric mobility.

The withdrawal of subsidies for electric three-wheelers demonstrates that targeted government intervention can successfully accelerate market development, allowing the segment to become self-sustaining without ongoing financial support.
