Automakers across China are expanding their HEV programs, with some targeting fuel consumption near 2–3 litre per 100 km under certain conditions.
Across the global automotive industry, the common notion prevailing since the past few years is that internal combustion engines (ICE) are on their way out. However, this notion is oblivious to the fact that most automotive markets around the world will continue to depend on fossil fuels for the coming decades. The biggest debate, however, is the rising cost of fuel and emissions that needs to be put under a check.
According to a Car News China report, Chinese automaker Geely unveiled a new engine last week that is considered to become the most fuel efficient ICE unit across the world. This engine is said to offer a fuel efficiency that should surpass most two-wheelers in the real world. The company has confirmed that this new-generation i-HEV “Intelligent Energy” hybrid system will make its way into models like Geely Monjaro and Geely Preface in the future.
Geely says its i-HEV system boosts overall efficiency by over 10%, thanks to AI-driven energy management and a powertrain designed specifically for hybrid use. The development reflects a wider trend in China’s auto industry, where manufacturers are turning to hybrids as a more cost-effective alternative to fully electric vehicles.

Unlike EVs or plug-in hybrids, hybrid models generally rely on much smaller batteries — typically in the 1–2 kWh range — which helps limit dependence on expensive raw materials used in larger battery packs. The i-HEV setup features a purpose-built hybrid engine with a claimed thermal efficiency of 48.4%, which Geely describes as among the highest achieved in a mass-production unit. Its electric motor produces 230 kW, allowing the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 30 kmph in just 1.84 seconds.
The system has been calibrated to improve responsiveness at low speeds, particularly in urban conditions, while also enhancing energy recovery. Geely said the i-HEV returned a fuel consumption figure of 2.22 litres per 100 km under combined conditions, with the claim independently verified by Guinness. This works out to an approximate mileage of 45 kmpl.

Geely is expected to introduce this hybrid technology across its mainstream passenger vehicle range starting in 2026. The system is also designed to work with multiple hybrid-focused engines, including 1.5-litre, 1.5TD, and 2.0TD units, paired with an integrated 11-in-1 electric drive module.
Chinese Carmakers such as Geely, Chery and Changan are scaling up their hybrid programmes, with some aiming for fuel consumption figures in the 2–3 litres per 100 km range under specific conditions. Hybrids also continue to hold a strong position globally. Toyota reported around 4.4 million hybrid sales in 2025, representing roughly 42% of its total volumes, underscoring sustained demand across key markets.
