The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has launched a hydrogen-powered shuttle bus service which will ply along Delhi’s Central Vista area starting May 15. The initiative is aimed at solving last-mile connectivity between metro stations and destinations with heavy traffic, including multiple government offices and institutions. It is a collaboration with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
The service was inaugurated at the Central Secretariat metro station on Friday, with two buses in service. Each one can seat 35 passengers. The buses feature GPS tracking and security cameras for safety and real-time route monitoring. IndianOil will provide fuel supplies and trained drivers, while DMRC will operate the buses.
In its initial phase, the service will run between 8.30am and 12.30pm, and again between 3.30pm and 6.30pm, every 30 minutes. They will only be operational from Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays. Tickets will cost either ₹10 or ₹15 depending on distance, and passengers can pay using National Common Mobility Cards, UPI, or cash.
In a statement, DMRC has said the service is aimed particularly at government workers and officials, who are encouraged to use public transport and reduce dependence on private vehicles. According to the agency, this is India's first zero-emission green hydrogen bus fleet. It is a step towards transitioning towards green fuels in the public transportation sector.
The full route is as follows, in both directions: Kartavya Bhawan, Vigyan Bhawan, Nirman Bhawan, Akbar Road, Baroda House, National Stadium, National Gallery of Modern Arts, India Gate, and Seva Teerth Metro Station.
