Royal Enfield showcased the Himalayan electric concept bike last year.
Royal Enfield developing an electric motorcycle is an open secret. Work on the project has been going on for many years and a special ‘Electric Mobility’ team has been set up to oversee this development. At the 2023 EICMA motorcycle show in Milan, Italy, RE showcased the Himalayan electric concept. From our sources, we have found out that the first Royal Enfield electric bike is almost production-ready and the final product can be unveiled as early as the end of this year. If this goes through then the first Royal Enfield electric bike might go on sale by the second half of 2025 or even earlier!
So what will be the approach by the iconic brand for its first electric motorcycle? Based on the Himalayan electric concept, it’s highly likely that RE can take an adventurous approach with its EV journey. Royal Enfield bossman, Sidhhartha Lal had mentioned in the past that EV motorcycles wouldn’t come cheap as the EV bike would easily cost 3 times more than an equivalent ICE motorcycle given the cost of batteries and components.
However, given the rapid growth in battery technology and drop in cost of components over the years should help RE in reducing the price further. The Royal Enfield Himalayan electric bike does look promising, but we have no details about its range, power and performance capabilities. The biggest challenge for Royal Enfield as a brand in the EV space will be range as its brand identity is based on touring and exploration. Given how poor the charging infra currently is in our country, touring on an electric motorcycle doesn’t seem like a natural option.
Having said that, we would like to see what kind of innovation manages with its first electric bike as Royal Enfield’s engineering department really impressed us with the 650 Twins, J-Platform and the recently launched Himalayan 450. On the conventional end of business, Royal Enfield might soon be launching the Classic 350 Bobber variant and the Guerrilla 450 in the Indian market.
