After entering the Indian motorcycle market with its first made-in-India motorcycle in the form of the Aprilia RS 457, parent company Piaggio has another big plan for our market. In a recent interaction with Acko Drive, Diego Graffi, Chairman & MD, Piaggio Group India confirmed that the Italian brand is developing an electric scooter for India. The new electric scooter could be positioned under the Vespa brand and will be different from the Vespa Elettrica sold globally.
The new Piaggio electric scooter will be manufactured in India and the components will be sourced locally to ensure that value proposition is maintained. However, Graffi added that the company is waiting for subsidies to be abolished before the electric scooter is introduced to the Indian market. The Piaggio electric scooter wouldn’t be affordable and will be positioned as a premium scooter just like how other Vespa ICE scooters are. Having said that, it wouldn’t be as expensive as the Vespa Elettrica which retails between ₹4.38 lakh and ₹6.65 lakh in the UK. For reference, the Vespa Elettrica features a 4 kW motor and has a range of 100 km.
We expect the Indian-made Piaggio electric scooter to offer similar specs and a range of close to 100 km as is the norm on premium electric scooters in our country. By manufacturing in India, Piaggio will not only be able to keep costs under control, but also maximise its margins with respect to exports. The new Piaggio electric scooter will not only be sold in India but could also be exported to emerging markets which are cost-conscious. More details on the new electric scooter are expected to be unveiled at EICMA 2025 in Milan, Italy that will take place towards the end of the year.
