A fire broke out at a BYD parking facility in Shenzhen housing test and scrapped vehicles. The blaze was contained with no casualties reported.
BYD confirmed to Reuters that a fire broke out at a parking structure within an industrial park in Shenzhen on April 14 morning. The facility was used to house test and scrapped vehicles.
According to the company, the fire was brought under control, and no casualties were reported. Local fire and rescue authorities had earlier flagged the incident, following which emergency response teams were deployed to the site.
The incident occurred in Shenzhen’s Pingshan district, where BYD’s global headquarters are located. While the company has not disclosed the cause of the fire, it clarified that the affected vehicles were not part of its active retail or customer fleet.
Following the incident, BYD’s shares were seen trading marginally lower during early hours, reflecting a limited market reaction.
Industry experts note that fires involving electric vehicles can behave differently compared to those involving internal combustion engine vehicles. Battery-related fires may last longer and are often more complex to extinguish due to the risk of re-ignition, requiring specialised handling procedures.
At this stage, there is no indication of any wider operational disruption. The company has not announced any impact on production or supply chains.
