GM will enter F1 in 2026 as Cadillac-TWG Global and will become an engine supplier by the end of this decade.
Formula 1 has confirmed that General Motors (GM) will join the motorsport as the 11th team in 2026 with GM/Cadillac. Furthermore, GM will also enter F1 as an engine supplier by the end of this decade. GM will enter F1 as Cadillac and in partnership with TWG Global.
It comes as a surprise since earlier this year, F1 rejected Andretti-GM’s bid to enter the pinnacle of motorsport. F1 says that since then, GM has achieved significant operational milestones and is “pleased to move forward with this application process”.
Stefano Domenicalli, President and CEO of F1, said, “General Motors and Cadillac’s commitment to this project is an important and positive demonstration of the evolution of our sport. We look forward to seeing the progress and growth of this application, certain of the full collaboration and support of all the parties involved.”
While Mario Andretti, the 1978 F1 World Champion, will not be able to have his own team in Formula 1, he will serve as a director on the team’s board. He added, “To still be involved at this stage of my life — I have to pinch myself to make sure I’m not dreaming.” TWG Global, who now owns Andretti Global (Andretti’s motorsport business), will enter F1 as a partner to GM-Cadillac.
Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President of the FIA, said, “General Motors is a huge global brand and powerhouse in the OEM world and is working with impressive partners. I am fully supportive of the efforts made by the FIA, Formula 1, GM and the team to maintain dialogue and work towards this outcome of an agreement in principle to progress this application to bring a GM/Cadillac branded team on the grid for the 2026 FIA Formula One World Championship. All parties, including the FIA, will continue to work together to ensure the process progresses smoothly.”
After nine years, F1 will have more than 10 teams and 20 cars on the grid in 2026. While two new teams are joining the grid in 2026, Audi will join the sport by acquiring Sauber and GM will be the 11th team on the grid. As mentioned earlier, GM will enter F1 as an engine supplier only towards the end of this year, likely after 2028, and till then GM will have to rely on other engine suppliers to power its team for the 2026 and 2027 seasons.
