The Find My Device network works similarly to Apple's Find My feature on iPhones.
Google officially announced its Find My Device network last year at the I/O 2023 as a way for Android users to locate missing phones, headphones, and other connected devices using the power of millions of Android smartphones. However, the feature has been delayed as Google worked with Apple to implement privacy protections.
Now, it appears the network is ready to launch. According to a report by 9to5Google, Google sent some users an email stating the Find My Device network will be activated in just three days. Doing the math, that points to a launch date of either this Sunday, April 7th or Monday, April 8th.
The Find My Device network works similarly to Apple's Find My feature on iPhones. It leverages the vast population of Android devices to help users pinpoint a lost phone or accessory, even when it's offline or powered down. By pooling location data from participating Android phones, the network can triangulate the position of a missing item.
Google and Apple collaborated on setting industry standards to prevent the abuse of network technology to track individuals without consent. Important privacy controls have now been put in place, including an opt-out option for those who don't want their Android device assisting in location searches.
While the Find My Device features are already visible in Android settings, currently, they only use the owner's local devices and network connections. The upcoming activation of the shared network on April 7th or 8th will unlock much wider coverage by integrating location data from millions of other Android phones.
This long-awaited launch finally brings Google's solution for finding lost devices into parity with Apple's popular Find My service. It should give Android users a much greater ability to recover phones and accessories should they become missing or misplaced. Do note that Google has yet to share an official announcement on whether the Find My Device network will go live in India simultaneously with countries like the US and the UK.
