Government Reaffirms E20 Safety Amid Growing Online Backlash

Amid mounting online opposition and a newly spawned citizen-led movement against ethanol-blended petrol, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has issued a public defense confirming that E20 fuel causes no widespread engine damage or mechanical failure.

In a video post shared on social media, the Ministry addressed widespread consumer anxieties, asserting that the 20 percent ethanol blend is supported by rigorous laboratory testing, real-world validation, and extensive automotive performance data.

The government noted that out of more than 1.5 crore older, non-E20-certified vehicles serviced by a major manufacturer during FY26, there were zero verified reports of corrosion, fuel pump failure, or abnormal engine wear attributable to E20 petrol.

This direct public outreach comes as Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari finds himself at the centre of growing digital criticism following the recent success of youth and student protests led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP).

Riding the momentum of the CJP campaign, a new digital outfit named the ‘E20 Janta Party’ launched an online movement demanding greater transparency in India's fuel policy, the availability of pure ethanol-free petrol at standard rates, and the resignation of Nitin Gadkari.

Social media platforms have seen a surge in memes and posts criticising the nationwide rollout of E20 fuel, with vehicle owners raising concerns over reduced mileage and potential long-term damage to older engine components.
