HPCL and Energy in Motion Partner to Build Electric Commercial Vehicle Charging Network

Energy In Motion Limited has signed a strategic agreement with state-owned oil marketing giant Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited to establish and operate fast-charging and battery swapping infrastructure for Heavy Commercial Vehicles across select fuel stations in India. Leveraging Hindustan Petroleum's expansive footprint of more than 25,000 retail outlets nationwide, the initiative aims to accelerate the transition to electric long-haul freight by delivering reliable power infrastructure along critical transportation routes.

Under the initial phase of the agreement, Energy In Motion will construct integrated swap-and-charge facilities along high-density logistics corridors, including Mumbai-Pune, Delhi-Jaipur, and Chennai-Bengaluru, over the next 18 to 24 months.

The deployment model utilises a division of roles where Energy In Motion supplies and manages the battery inventory, charging hardware, and digital monitoring systems, while Hindustan Petroleum provides prime forecourt space, grid connections, amenities, and round-the-clock site personnel. The battery swapping technology allows drivers of heavy electric trucks to exchange depleted battery packs for fully charged units in seven minutes, drastically reducing vehicle downtime compared to standard plug-in charging.

The partnership builds upon Energy In Motion's broader ecosystem for electric commercial transport, which includes its flagship Ashwa 55-tonne electric tractor-trailer. The company currently operates six heavy-duty swapping hubs across the Delhi-NCR region and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority port area, capable of handling 840 battery swaps daily. Through its collaboration with Hindustan Petroleum, the company aims to scale its operational footprint to 40 heavy-vehicle swap-and-charge stations nationwide by March 2027.

Managing Director Narendra Murkumbi noted that integrating swapping setups into established fuel stations provides essential power access, physical space, and safety systems required for dependable highway freight operations.
