Volvo Car India has initiated the Reverse Project, a sustainability effort aimed at reversing environmental damage by planting trees proportional to the mileage driven on electric vehicles (EVs) of any brand. The project, in partnership with ASSOCHAM, started with the planting of 10,000 trees to convert a dump yard in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh into an urban forest.
For every EV sold by Volvo, five trees have been planted. Additionally, EV owners from other brands can participate by having four trees planted for every 5,000 km they drive, with trees named in their honour. Non-EV owners can also join the initiative by taking a pledge, which results in the planting of three trees named after them.
Jyoti Malhotra, Managing Director, Volvo Car India said, “Irrespective of where you are in India and what EV you drive, once you register on the Reverse Project site 4 trees at the Urban Forest will be named after you for every 5000 kilometres that you drive. What better way to turn kilometres into trees? For non-EV users, once they take a pledge, 3 trees will be named on their behalf.”
This initiative commits Volvo Car India to the care and maintenance of the urban forest for the next four years. The transformation of the Ghaziabad landfill, previously a significant environmental hazard, into a green space, is a testament to the project's impact.
The Reverse Project is part of Volvo Car India's broader objective of promoting sustainability and achieving net carbon neutrality by 2040. Participants in this initiative will receive a certificate acknowledging their contribution to environmental conservation.
