How much of an evolution is the new Hero Mavrick over the Harley-Davidson X440?
Over the past few years there has been a spur of new retro modern motorcycle offerings. Whether it’s Triumph, TVS, or even Harley-Davidson, a lot of these manufacturers have started to populate this segment with its interpretation. So, it was obvious that Hero MotoCorp, the largest two-wheeler manufacturer in the country, didn't want to miss out on this grand party. And to that, the brand unveiled the Mavrick 440. It is based on the same platform that also underpins the Harley-Davidson X440, albeit with certain changes.
The question is, how do those changes fair in comparison to the Harley, more importantly, what are the main differences?
Specifications | Hero Mavrick 440 | Harley-Davidson X440 |
---|---|---|
Engine Displacement | 440cc, air/oil-cooled, SOHC, 2-valve | 440cc, air/oil-cooled, SOHC, 2-valve |
Power | 27 bhp @ 6000 rpm | 27 bhp @ 6000 rpm |
Torque | 36 Nm @ 4000 rpm | 38 Nm @ 4000 rpm |
Transmission | 6-speed with assist/slipper clutch | 6-speed with assist/slipper clutch |
The engine in both the motorcycles is the same. However, in the Mavrick 440, the air/oil-cooled, single-cylinder engine produces 2 Nm less torque than the H-D X440. The engine still red lines at 6,000 rpm in both motorcycles. Aside from that, the six-speed gearbox is carried over to the Mavrick 440 as well, but the gearing ratio is expected to be different in the Hero bike. The other big difference is that 90% of the peak torque on the Hero offering is offered at just 2,000 rpm.
Specification | Hero Mavrick 440 | Harley-Davidson X440 |
---|---|---|
Frame | Trellis Frame body | Trellis Frame body |
Suspension (Front) | 43mm, Telescopic Fork | KYB 43mm, Upside-Down Fork |
Suspension (Rear) | Hydraulic Twin Shock Absorber, 7-step preload adjustable | Gas-Filled Twin Shock. 7-step preload adjustable |
Brake (Front) | 320mm | 320mm |
Brake (Rear) | 240mm | 240mm |
The Harley-Davidson X440 sports 43 mm KYB-sourced USD Fork and gas-filled twin-shock absorbers to handle suspension duties. The Hero Mavrick on the other hand features a smimpler telescopic fork and hydraulic rear twin shock absorber. Hero has deliberately gone for lower-spec suspension equipment to cut down on cost. However, the disc brakes available in both the motorcycles are the same, and dual-channel ABS is standard.
Specifications | Hero Mavrick 440 | Harley-Davidson X440 |
---|---|---|
Length x Width x Height | 2100 mm x 868 mm x 1112 mm | 2168 mm x NA X NA |
Wheelbase | 1388 mm | 1418 mm |
Seat Height (Unladen) | 803 mm | 805 mm |
Ground Clearance | 175 mm | 170 mm |
Kerb Weight (Dry) | Alloy - 187 kg, Spoke - 191 kg | 190.5 kg |
Fuel Tank Capacity | 13.5-litres | 13.5-litres |
The different individual styling on both the motorcycle has also affected their respective dimensions. For starters, the Harley-Davidson X440 has a longer wheelbase than the Mavrick because of the more relaxed rake angle. This gives the former better cruising credentials, whereas the Mavrick 440 will be agile and quick in corners.
The seat height is also different in both the motorcycles(unladen), however, despite a lower seat height than the Harley-Davidson X440, the Mavrick stands 5mm more from the ground making the latter more suited on our pothole-ridden roads. And lastly, the Hero Mavrick with spoke wheels might weigh the same as the Harley-Davidson X440, but with alloy wheels, it’s lighter by almost 3 kg (dry weight).
While both the Hero and Harley get fully digital instrument clusters, the new fully digital LCD instrument cluster on the Hero has a better layout than the more premium TFT unit on its American sibling. The feature list is almost the same for both bikes. Both get Bluetooth connectivity which in turn gets you turn-by-turn navigation, accept and reject calls, phone battery status, missed call alert, message alert, etc.
Similarly, both the bikes also get all-LED lighting with an automatic projector headlamp. This feature is restricted to the top models only in both bikes. Along with that, a USB type-2 charging slot, and dual-channel ABS is available as standard with both the Mavrick 440 and H-D X440.
Just like the Harley-Davidson X440’s Denim, Vivid, and S variants, the Hero Mavrick 440 is also available in Base, Mid, and Top spec variants. The equipment list is also similar with the base variants getting spoke wheels, mid variants getting regular alloy wheels, and the top-spec models getting diamond cut alloy wheels.
While Hero is yet to announce the price of the new Mavrick, the X440 is priced from ₹2.40 lakh and go all the way up to ₹2.80 lakh. The Mavrick’s price will be announced in February (the exact date is yet to be specified) and deliveries for the same will commence from April onwards. We expect the Hero Mavrick 440 to be priced around ₹ 2.20 lakh (ex-showroom).
