Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India Limited wants to become the number one electric two-wheeler manufacturer in India. In order to do that, the Japanese brand has chalked a plan to set up a dedicated electric two-wheeler manufacturing facility in the country by 2028. The new manufacturing unit will be established in Karnataka, near Honda's existing Narasapura plant. It will focus on producing various electric motorcycles. The facility also will implement a modular production approach, with initial plans to manufacture a 4 kWh battery-equipped commuter bike comparable to a 100 cc bike. The EV plant's capabilities will later extend to mid-sized electric motorcycles as well and will also serve both domestic demand and function as an export hub for emerging markets.
This development follows Honda's initial steps into India's electric vehicle sector in early 2025, marked by the launch of two electric scooters - the Activa e and QC1. The Activa e features a battery-swapping system, which Honda plans to support by establishing swappable battery stations initially in Delhi, Bengaluru, and Mumbai. Honda is also collaborating with battery manufacturers to ensure reliable component supply. The upcoming Indian facility is expected to serve both domestic demand and function as an export hub for emerging markets.
For the Indian market specifically, Honda plans to develop both swappable battery and fixed battery vehicles. This strategic approach demonstrates Honda's commitment to becoming a leading player in India's evolving electric two-wheeler market.
