Honda Cars India Ltd has announced that it has begun public road testing and verification for its first all-electric model in the country, based on the global Honda 0 Alpha prototype. The news comes just a day after the company confirmed a ₹1,200 crore investment in its Tapukara plant in Rajasthan in order to begin production of the 0 Alpha SUV for domestic sales as well as exports of the electric SUV.
An official launch date for India is not yet known, but its global debut is expected within the 2026-27 financial year. A prototype of this model was first unveiled at the Japan Mobility Show in 2025. The upcoming model will be targeted at urban, lifestyle-oriented buyers. Interestingly, Japan will be a key export market for the 0 Alpha.
Testing the production version in India will allow Honda to fine-tune it for real-world driving in India including extreme climate variations and diverse road conditions. The company will be testing the 0 Alpha for durability, handling, ride comfort, efficiency, and reliability, as well as evaluating its charging performance at various types of charging points across India.
The all-India test programme for the 0 Alpha was flagged off at the Tapukara plant by senior Honda management including Yujiro Sugino, Director, Marketing & Sales; Toshikazu Hirose, Large Project Leader, Honda 0 Alpha; Takashi Nakajima, President & CEO; Katsuhiro Kaneda, Senior Vice President & Director, Manufacturing; and Kunal Behl, Vice President.
Speaking at the ceremony, Takashi Nakajima, President and CEO, Honda Cars India, said, “The start of pan-India public road verification testing is a key milestone in our electrification journey. India has unique driving and climate conditions, and it is important for us to test our electric vehicle thoroughly in real-world environments. This programme reflects Honda’s global engineering strengths combined with a strong focus on local customer needs, as we prepare to introduce an electric SUV that offers reliability, comfort, and ease of use.”
While plans for the 0 Alpha look set to go ahead, Honda last week cancelled its more ambitious 0-series models, a larger SUV and a saloon, as well as the electric Acura RSX, which were considered key to reviving its fortunes in key global markets, particularly the US. The shock move and resulting writeoffs of manufacturing equipment and development costs will push its annual loss up to a staggering $15.8 billion, which the company called an “extremely challenging earnings situation”. However, it believes that the outcome would be worse if it went ahead, largely thanks to declining demand for EVs in many countries. The 0 series models were previously expected to go into production in the US within the next few months. Honda attributes its decision to the ending of EV purchase and manufacturing incentives, a reversal of electrification targets and fossil fuel disincentives, and the growing competitiveness of Chinese carmakers. It says it will continue its commitment to pursuing carbon neutrality in other ways, going forward.
