Honda Drive To Discover 12: Exploring The Himalayan Tapestry

A convoy of Hondas embarked on a breathtaking expedition through the terrains of West Bengal and Sikkim.

In the heart of India's diverse landscapes, a convoy of Honda’s recently embarked on a breathtaking expedition through the enchanting terrains of West Bengal and Sikkim. This marked the 12th edition of the 'Drive To Discover,' aptly named 'Journey To The East.' A tale of exploration unfolded as the convoy navigated through picturesque landscapes, encountering challenges, and forging unforgettable memories.

Day 1: Siliguri -- Gangtok

Our grand odyssey unfurled its wings in the bustling city of Siliguri, West Bengal, a city entangled in the web of construction chaos. The Honda City e: HEV, our trusted chariot with a legacy spanning 25 glorious years on Indian roads, stood poised at the threshold of adventure. With the City's clamour fading behind us, we emerged onto the open road, a ribbon of freedom winding through the foothills of majestic mountains. The City again revealed its indomitable spirit, effortlessly gliding over the challenging terrain as if dancing with the undulating landscape.

As our journey meandered into the enigmatic state of Sikkim, the 5th-gen City unfolded its prowess, a performer in every twist and turn. It gripped the asphalt with unyielding stability, navigating the sharp bends with a grace that bordered on the dramatic. Under the hood, the 1.5-litre hybrid engine roared to life, a powerhouse that scoffed at the notion of steep inclines. Each ascent became a conquest, a testament to the grit of this automotive titan.

The day bowed out in Gangtok, the regal state capital, with the city lights flickering to life as the clock struck 6 pm.

Day 2: Gangtok -- Nathula Pass

With the dawn of a new day, our convoy eagerly set its course Northward, a courageous pilgrimage towards the majestic Nathu La Pass, where the borders of India and China delicately intertwine. Leading this expedition was none other than the Honda Elevate, donned in its manual variant, a formidable steed ready to conquer the impending challenges.

As the convoy ascended into the realm of Nathu La Pass, where temperatures flirted with freezing, the road unfurled beneath us like a well-scripted drama. Thanks to the efforts of the Border Road Operations, the path laid before us was not just a route but a symphony of well-surfaced perfection. In this high-altitude theatre, the Elevate's sunroof emerged as the protagonist, revealing a panoramic canvas of breathtaking landscapes. The unfolding drama included the captivating Lake Tsongmo, a shimmering jewel amid the rugged terrain.

The descent back to Gangtok was a crescendo of exhilaration, a test of the Elevate's prowess on the flat stretches of road. It was in this thrilling descent that the auto headlamp feature cast its enchanting spell, illuminating the way forward as our trusted companion embraced the challenges with unwavering grace.

Day 3: Gangtok -- Pelling

After a night of local music and anecdotes, the convoy set its sights on Pelling. The Honda City in its manual variant proved its mettle on the 100 km journey. Though missing the plush comfort of the Elevate, the City's engine showcased its playful side on hilly roads. As the convoy approached Pelling, the compact sedan smoothly navigated bends and inclines offering a glimpse of its adaptability.

Day 4: Pelling -- Darjeeling -- Kalimpong

The day commenced with an early visit to the Pelling Skywalk, providing a spectacular view of the Kanchenjunga mountain range. The Honda Elevate conquering tight ascents and broken roads led the convoy to Darjeeling. Navigating through adventurous routes, the convoy reached Ging Tea Estate for lunch preparing for the evening journey to Kalimpong.

Descending from the hills, the Elevate demonstrated its dynamic capabilities maintaining poise along the twisty roads. The day ended with the convoy arriving at Kalimpong just in time for a well-deserved dinner.

Day 5: Kalimpong -- Siliguri -- Delhi

The final leg, a short 65 km drive from Kalimpong to Siliguri, unfolded with the Honda Amaze leading the way. Negotiating under-construction roads with the agility of a go-cart, the convoy reached Siliguri marking the end of an exhilarating adventure.

As the Honda Drive To Discover 12 concluded, laughter, dust and a shared spirit of adventure lingered in the air. Sikkim had proven to be a unique challenge, etching memories that would stand tall in my heart, much like the mountain peaks that adorned the landscape. The road might have come to an end, but the echoes of this journey would resonate forever.
