With the production line set up we can expect more solid details coming out about the Honda Activa electric scooter.
Honda is strategically expanding its production capabilities to address the increasing electric vehicle (EV) market in India. The Japanese giant is a well-established leader in the ICE two-wheeler segment and has unveiled plans to introduce two new electric scooters, mostly in the Activa Electric lineup by March 2025.
A significant development in this expansion is the dedicated production line for electric vehicles being set up at the Honda Karnataka plant. This new line is expected to be operational by December 2024, paving the way for the mass production of Honda's electric scooters. Apart from Karnataka, Honda also has plans to add a dedicated Activa electric manufacturing line at its Gujarat plant. The additional production lines at both factories will also contribute to an overall increase in manufacturing capacity.
The first electric scooter to be introduced is likely to be the eagerly awaited Activa Electric. This mid-range offering is anticipated to be competitively priced and come equipped with a fixed battery. Patents filed by Honda for a fixed battery and hub motor design offer clues about the potential technology powering this upcoming e-scooter. Both the above signify that the first Honda Activa-E will be positioned as an economical EV option.
The second Activa Electric scooter will incorporate a swappable battery system and a larger motor letting riders effortlessly swap depleted batteries for charged ones at designated swapping stations. This Honda Activa-E will be positioned as a premium electric scooter.
Honda plans to establish a nationwide network of battery swapping stations. By leveraging their existing network of over 6,000 touchpoints, the company aims to convert some of these service centres in "Workshop E" facilities specifically designed to charge and service Activa Electric products.
To accommodate the projected demand for electric scooters with the launch of Activa Electric, Honda is constructing a dedicated electric vehicle production facility, "Factory E," at their Narsapura plant in Karnataka. This cutting-edge facility will have the capacity to manufacture electric motors, with a projected production target of 1 million units by 2030.Furthermore, Honda is sourcing batteries and Power Control Units from domestic Indian manufacturers, thereby promoting local production and contributing to India's electric mobility ecosystem.
