The Hyundai Inster EV could come to India and when it does, it will rival the Tata Punch.ev.

Hyundai Motor Company recently revealed its latest and smallest electric vehicle (EV), called the Inster EV. It is also expected to come to India and when it does, it will rival the Tata Punch.ev. However, it remains to be seen if the International-spec model will come to India or will Hyundai modify it for India. However, Let’s see how both electric micro SUVs fare on paper.

Despite being shorter in length, the Inster has a 135 mm longer wheelbase than the Punch.ev. The Punch.ev is 32 mm longer, 132 mm wider and 58 mm taller than the Inster. The longer wheelbase should help the Inter to have more legroom inside, but the extra width of the Punch.ev should make it seem more spacious inside.

While the Inster has a 280-litre boot, Hyundai says it can be increased to up to 351 litres with the sliding rear seats set in their most forward position. However, the Punch.ev still gets a larger boot, with an additional 15 litres of space.

Both the micro SUVs come with two battery pack options. The Standard variant gets a 42 kWh battery, while the Long Range (LR) version gets a 49 kWh battery pack. On the other hand, the Punch.ev gets marginally smaller battery pack options, with the Medium Range (MR) variant getting a 25 kWh unit and the LR getting a 35 kWh unit.

Hyundai claims the Standard variant of the Inster will have more than 300 km of range on a single charge. The Long Range variant will have around 355 km of range. Despite the smaller battery packs in the Punch.ev, it has more range in both variants. The Punch.ev MR has a range of 315 km, while the LR version gets a claimed range of 421 km on a full charge.

The Standard variant of the Inster makes more power than the Punch.ev MR. The Hyundai EV develops 95 bhp and 147 Nm, while the Tata Motors EV develops 80 bhp and 114 Nm. However, it is the other way round for both the long-range variants. The Inster churns out 113 bhp and 147 Nm and the Punch.ev produces 121 bhp and 190 Nm. The higher torque figure also allows the Punch.ev LR to be quicker in the 0-100 kmph run compared to the Inster LR.

As standard, the Inster gets 11 kW charging support, while the Punch.ev gets 7.2 kW AC charging. It takes the Inster Standard variant around 4 hours to charge fully, while it takes 3 hours and 30 minutes for the Punch.ev MR variant. The LR variants of the Inster and Punch.ev take 4 hours 35 minutes and 5 hours, respectively.

Interestingly, the Inster comes with 120 kW DC fast charging support, much faster than the Punch.ev which supports 50 kW DC fast charging. It takes the Inster 30 minutes to charge from 10-80 per cent, while it takes 56 minutes for the Punch.ev.
