Hyundai Motor Group signed a multi party pact to build a hydrogen ecosystem in Hong Kong. The project includes waste to hydrogen production and fuel cell bus deployment.
Hyundai Motor Group has entered into a strategic agreement with several international partners to develop a comprehensive hydrogen ecosystem in Hong Kong. Signed during the International Hydrogen Development Symposium 2026, the memorandum of understanding involves ten specialised companies from South Korea, China, Hong Kong, and France. This initiative aims to establish the city as a regional hub for the group’s hydrogen business across the Asia Pacific.
The project will utilise a waste to hydrogen model, which converts underutilised landfill gas into low carbon hydrogen. This approach builds on successful implementations by the manufacturer in South Korea and Indonesia. The plan includes the local production of clean energy, the establishment of liquid hydrogen refuelling stations, and the deployment of hydrogen powered commercial vehicles. Specifically, the group intends to introduce fuel cell buses tailored for the city’s tourism and airport shuttle sectors to support Hong Kong’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

Key partners include Hyundai Engineering and Construction, which will design the production infrastructure, and Towngas, which will collaborate on distribution and utilisation. Other participants such as Veolia and Chun Wo will provide local support for facility construction and bus operations. The group’s overseas fuel cell facility, HTWO Guangzhou, is expected to supply the necessary power systems for the vehicles.
Seung Kyu Shin, Executive Vice President at Hyundai Motor Group, stated that the partnership reflects a commitment to driving proactive energy policies through the group’s integrated value chain. Following the agreement, the focus will shift to site confirmation and facility design, which is scheduled to begin by 2027. The partners aim to have a fully operational and self-sustaining hydrogen ecosystem in place by 2030, marking a significant step in the transition toward green mobility in urban environments.
