Growing export numbers over the course of this financial year are proving to be a significant positive development for the Indian auto manufacturing industry. The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) has released new numbers for the first half of FY2025-26 showing a record high of 31,43,224 exports of Made-in-India vehicles across all categories, a huge 24 percent increase over the 25,27,909 units exported in the same period last year.
Export volumes are up in every passenger and commercial vehicle category except quadricycles and three-wheeled e-carts. Mopeds registered the highest rise at 350.4 percent, though absolute numbers are relatively low at 12,648 units in the April-September period. On the other hand, the highest volumes came from passenger cars at 2,29,281 units representing 12 percent growth over the same period in the previous financial year.
Passenger utility vehicles and vans also grew by 26 percent and 37 percent respectively. Total exports of passenger cars stood at 4,45,884 units, up from 3,76,679 units, for 18 percent growth year-on-year.
Scooters and motorcycles showed 3 percent and 28 percent growth respectively. Medium and heavy commercial passenger and goods carriers combined grew by 63 percent while light commercial vehicles grew by 8 percent for an average of 23 percent.
These positive numbers come amid a huge boost in domestic demand thanks to GST reductions and the festive season. The numbers all point to a record-breaking FY26.
ACKO Drive reported all-time high exports from Maruti Suzuki with 42,204 units in September 2025 alone, compensating for softer domestic sales. The company recently began exporting its first made-in-India electric car, the e Vitara, which isn’t even on sale here yet. Hyundai India also posted strong export numbers in August this year despite domestic sales actually declining YoY.
The scooter and bike segments also grew significantly in terms of exports in September 2025, with Bajaj Auto and TVS Motor Company alone accounting for nearly 80 per cent of the total volume.
Bajaj Auto, Piaggio Vehicles, and Mahindra Last Mile Mobility also reported strong exports in the three-wheeler segment in September, catering to countries in Africa and South America.
