The Corolla range has been a mainstay for Toyota since 1966 but the upcoming version will be a radical overhaul.
The latest edition of the Japan Mobility Show has attracted quite a few eyeballs with multiple upcoming models and concepts presented at the annual motoring exhibition. One of the biggest highlights on the first day has been the brand new Toyota Corolla Concept. Still some distance to reach the production stage, the upcoming iteration of the Corolla will replace the current 12th generation model that has been around since 2018.
Expected to take its final shape around 2026 or the year after, the new Corolla Concept looks a radical departure from its predecessor as far as looks are concerned. From the outset, the Corolla Concept seems straight out a sci-fi movie with its futuristic design. Starting with the front fascia, the upcoming Corolla follows the company’s latest Hammerhead design language, characterized by angular, boomerang-shaped daytime running lights and a full-width light bar integrated into the low-set nose.

Further rearward, the elevated front fenders and sculpted bonnet evoke supercar-inspired aesthetics, enhancing the vehicle’s sporty appeal. The expansive windscreen extends into the roofline, emphasizing modernity and aerodynamic refinement. Coming to the side profile, the front fender hosts a charging port flap with notable cuts and creases along the doors. The blacked-out B and C-pillars provide a floating roof effect to the overall design, flowing all the way to the tail.
The concept stands on 21-inch alloy wheels that give the car a good presence. Complementing the entire design is its rear end that looks interesting with a sloping coupe roofline, a ducktail rear spoiler, and a connected LED light bar that spans the width of the tailgate. Like the current model, we expect the new-gen Toyota Corolla to come in both sedan and hatchback derivatives.
The futuristic design outside has been carried over to the interiors as well. The dashboard of the new Toyota Corolla Concept gets minimal physical buttons with most of the controls for the infotainment and other functionalities relocated behind the three-spoke steering wheel. The most unique highlight, however, is the floating island between the front seats and dashboard housing the Start/Stop button and a crystal-like gear selector shaped into the form of the concept.

The floating centre console houses a separate screen for the climate control settings. The free-standing nature of the centre console has improved space management. The increased wheelbase has also resulted in more space for the rear seats.
Toyota hasn’t confirmed the exact powertrain specifications for the upcoming version of the Corolla, yet but the world’s largest automaker has revealed that it will be available in as many as four different variations including fully electric, plug-in hybrid, strong hybrid and conventional combustion engine.
Although Toyota hasn’t shared if an India launch for the new-gen Corolla is on cards or not, the “Corolla” nametag holds a special value in the eye of Indian consumers and resurrecting the same could potentially be a big step for the Japanese carmaker in the country.
