Is the new Jawa 42 FJ regal and powerful enough to take on the popular classic-styled roadster, the Royal Enfield Classic 350?
The newly launched Jawa 42 FJ is a refreshing take on the existing Jawa 42. It has grown in size, has a refined engine, better and brighter colour options, and looks sporty too. Therefore, it tries to offer a unique and premium perspective in the heavily populated roadster segment. But can it outgrow the reputation and sales of the most popular motorcycles in this segment – the Royal Enfield Classic 350? Let's find out in this spec comparison.
Specification | Jawa 42 FJ | 2024 Royal Enfield Classic 350 |
Engine | 334 cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled | 349 cc, single-cylinder, air-cooled |
Power | 28.77 bhp | 20.2 bhp |
Torque | 26.92 Nm | 27 Nm |
Transmission | 6-speed | 5-speed |
Despite the smaller engine capacity, the Jawa 42 FJ produces more power than the Royal Enfield Classic 350. Consequently, the Jawa would feel quicker and sportier to ride. However, the Royal Enfield Classic 350's low-end torque engine will feel more relaxed than the Jawa 42 FJ. The Jawa engine is also more modern as it gets liquid-cooling and the bikes comes with a slip and assist clutch which should make it less tiring to ride in crawling trafic.
Specification | Jawa 42 FJ | 2024 Royal Enfield Classic 350 |
Front Suspension | 41 mm, telescopic fork | 41 mm, telescopic fork |
Rear Suspension | Twin-shock absorber with 5-step adjustable preload | Twin-shock absorber with six-step adjustable preload |
Front Brake | Disc Brake With Floating Caliper | Disc Brake With Floating Caliper |
Rear Brake | Disc Brake With Floating Caliper | Disc Brake With Floating Caliper |
Both motorcycles are built around a dual-cradle frame chassis and equip a similarly sized telescopic fork at the front. The rear suspension set-up is also the same. However, the Royal Enfield Classic 350, with its 6-step preload adjustable, will offer a bit more flexibility and, therefore, aid better pillion comfort.
Specification | Jawa 42 FJ | 2024 Royal Enfield Classic 350 |
Length | NA | 2145 mm |
Width | NA | 785 mm |
Height | NA | 1090 mm |
Fuel Tank Capacity | 12-litres | 13-litres |
Wheelbase | 1440 mm | 1390 mm |
Kerb Weight | 184 kg | 195 kg |
Ground Clearance | 178 mm | 170 mm |
Seat Height | 790 mm | 805 mm |
While the Jawa 42 FJ has grown in size, it still reads smaller than the Royal Enfield Classic 350 on paper. Starting with the fuel tank, which is 1 litre smaller, and while we have yet to get exact specifications for Jawa's length, width, and height, we expect it to be longer and taller than the RE. This primarily boils down to its wheelbase, which is significantly more than the RE. Where the Jawa scores is seat height as the bike is more accessible and not to forget, the 42 FJ is also lighter than its rival.
This is one segment where Royal Enfield made significant strides with the new 2024 Classic 350 without losing out on the retro feel. So, even if it gets a fully analogue instrument cluster, a small LCD reading below displays the fuel gauge and a gear position indicator. Additionally, the 2024 Classic 350 now also gets LED lighting, both for the headlight and tail light and the indicators. Moreover, RE's optional Tripper Navigation pod will further get you turn-by-turn navigation.
The Jawa 42 FJ, on the other hand, might have a fully digital instrument cluster; however, it does not have a phone connectivity option. As a consequence, there's no turn-by-turn navigation or call/SMS alert available here. It does have an LED headlight, turn indicator, and tail light. Otherwise, a C-type USB charger is available as standard in both bikes.
Both the Jawa 42 FJ and Royal Enfield Classic 350 start from ₹1.99 lakh onwards. But the Jawa tops off at ₹2.20 lakh, and the Royal Enfield Classic 350 tops off at ₹2.30 lakh (both ex-showroom, Delhi). So, for that additional ₹10,000, the Royal Enfield Classic 350 is available in a nice rich Emerald colour option with chrome embellishment. Jawa keeps matters simple and offers the 42 FJ in a deep black matte black option. While keeping the body shiny and clean is a challenge with both chrome and matte textures, it's the Royal Enfield Classic 350 that feels more appealing. So, in terms of pricing both bikes are similar but the riding experience is completely different as the Classic 350 is a relaxed and chill bike whereas the Jawa 42 FJ is a fast and peppy roadster.
