Jeep has had another controversy. Users on Reddit have shared that their Jeep cars have started showing pop-up ads in the infotainment system. And these aren’t any normal pop-ups, they occupy the entire screen.
These annoying pop-up ads are showing on cars in North America, specifically in the USA right now. The pop-up ads give you two options which include ‘OK’ to acknowledge the add or make a call to a Stellantis call centre to buy whatever the ad is selling. There is also a third option where users can click on ‘X’ to cancel the ad. According to the users, there is no way to turn off the ads and they pop up every time the car comes to a halt.
While this instance happened with a Jeep Grand Cherokee, other owners with either a Wrangler or a Gladiator have confirmed that they too have received similar ads over the past few years. The ad is mostly about extended warranty which Jeep is calling ‘Peace of Mind’. As per the ad, the car must have covered fewer than 36,000 miles (roughly 58,000 km) but the Reddit user who shared the ad said their car recently crossed the 36,000 miles mark.
What’s wrong with these ads? They’re highly distracting. They can also pose as a risk while driving as a small stop will activate the ad and cause the driver to take their eyes off the road. They’re also annoying. Everyone hates ads coming in their phones and now dealing with them in your car’s infotainment system will be painful. There seems to be no immediate remedy to this apart from cancelling the ad everytime it pops up.
A small research with Jeep owners in India revealed they haven’t started getting any such ads in their cars. However, this doesn’t rule out the possibility that it could happen in the Indian cars in the future.
