Kia India Opens Pre-Bookings for All-New Sorento, Its First Hybrid SUV in India

Kia India has opened official pre-bookings for the all-new Sorento, releasing a teaser of the SUV that will become the carmaker's first hybrid offering in the country. The move, announced in New Delhi on 3 August, precedes a formal India launch whose date and pricing are yet to be disclosed.

The Sorento is Kia's flagship SUV globally, and its arrival extends a nameplate that has been in production since 2002. Across four generations, the model has sold more than 4.8 million units in 132 countries and is Kia's third-best-selling model worldwide. It has also earned recognition including the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating and a five-star NHTSA safety score, credentials that carmakers routinely lean on when introducing a flagship model to a new market.

For Kia India, the Sorento's hybrid powertrain is the more significant development than the badge itself. The company has built its Indian line-up — the Seltos, Sonet, Carens, Carnival, Syros, EV6, EV9 and Carens Clavis pair — around petrol, diesel and, more recently, electric options. A hybrid SUV fills a gap in that portfolio at a time when rivals are increasingly offering strong-hybrid variants to buyers wary of committing to a full electric vehicle but keen to cut fuel costs. The segment has grown steadily in India over the past two years, helped by tax treatment that keeps hybrids more affordable than diesel-electric alternatives in some states.

Interestingly, Kia's India website also confirms a diesel powertrain option along with the strong hybrid. Detailed technical specifications, variants, and feature lists have not yet been confirmed.

The teaser itself offers only a partial view of the SUV under wraps, but it points to a tall, upright stance with a pronounced shoulder line and a two-tier lighting signature — a sharp, angular graphic across the hood paired with a secondary cluster lower on the bumper. Such details, while limited, suggest Kia intends the India-spec Sorento to look distinct from left-hand-drive markets rather than being a straight import of the design.

Kia has built its Indian manufacturing base at Anantapur in Andhra Pradesh, where production began in 2019 under an installed capacity of 400,000 units annually. The plant has shipped close to 1.9 million vehicles to date, of which over 1.5 million were sold domestically and more than 3.67 lakh exported. Whether the Sorento will be built locally or imported as a completely knocked-down unit has not been confirmed, and that decision will shape its eventual price point.

Kia India said further details, including launch timing, would be announced in due course. Interested buyers can pre-book the SUV through Kia dealerships or the company's website. The Sorento's arrival will be watched closely as a test of appetite for premium hybrid SUVs in a market still dominated by compact and mid-size offerings.
