Markus Lundh set the new lap record on the famed 3.54 km circuit clocking 1 minute 24.86 seconds.
Monterey Car Week 2024 saw a highlight moment when Swedish hypercar manufacturer Koenigsegg took to the Laguna Seca track for what was initially intended as a casual track day for its customers. The event, however, culminated in a stunning achievement as the Koenigsegg Jesko Attack, piloted by test driver Markus Lundh, set a new lap record for homologated production cars on the famed 3.54 km circuit. Lundh clocked a 1 minute 24.86 seconds, a significant milestone considering it was both his and Jesko's first time on the track.
The Jesko Attack is Koenigsegg’s high downforce variant, distinguished by a prominent active rear wing designed for maximum aerodynamic performance. Powering the hypercar is a 5.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, delivering an output of 1262 bhp (which can increase to 1578 bhp when fueled with E85) and 1500 Nm of torque. A 9-speed multi-clutch transmission manages the engine’s impressive power, dubbed the "Light Speed Transmission" (LST) by Koenigsegg.
Markus Lundh, who had only ever driven the Laguna Seca track in a simulator before the event, demonstrated remarkable skill and adaptability. Despite the difference between virtual and real-world driving conditions, Lundh’s record-setting lap underscored Jesko's engineering prowess and Koenigsegg’s commitment to pushing automotive boundaries.

The significance of this record is not only in the performance of the Jesko Attack but also in what it represents for Koenigsegg’s presence in the U.S. market. The brand also celebrated the delivery of its first U.S.-spec Jesko during Monterey Car Week. The hypercar was unveiled at the prestigious Quail Motorsports Gathering before being officially handed over to its new owner.
The lap record further bolsters Koenigsegg’s reputation as a leading innovator in the hypercar segment. However, it also raises broader questions about the rapidly evolving landscape of performance cars. With the increasing integration of advanced simulations and real-world driving data, the boundary between virtual and actual performance testing continues to blur. While Lundh’s experience at Laguna Seca highlights this trend, it also serves as a reminder of the skill and human element still central to high-performance motorsport.
