Land Rover is set to rock the off-road world with the official unveiling of the Defender Octa on July 3, 2024. This anticipated SUV boasts a twin-turbocharged V8 engine, making it the most powerful Defender ever.
While JLR initially teased a fully electric Defender, the Octa takes a different approach with a "mild hybrid" powertrain. This setup utilises an electric motor to enhance torque and improve gas mileage for the V8 engine.
The Defender is renowned for its off-road prowess and luxurious interiors, making it a favourite among celebrities, government officials, and adventure enthusiasts alike. The base Defender starts at around $60,000 (Approx ₹50 lakh), with top-tier models exceeding $100,000 (Approx ₹83 lakh). Pricing for the Octa has yet to be revealed.
The Defender Octa packs a punch with its twin-turbocharged V8 engine. But Land Rover isn't neglecting efficiency entirely. The inclusion of a mild hybrid powertrain indicates the automaker's commitment to balancing power with improved gas mileage. This setup utilises an electric motor to boost torque, offering drivers a more responsive and exhilarating experience. Additionally, the mild hybrid system can potentially increase towing capacity, making the Defender Octa even more adept at hauling heavy loads. However, details regarding the possibility of an "electric only" driving range remain unclear.
The Octa is expected to tackle demanding environments like race tracks, rally stages, and rock crawls. The prototypes hint at the Defender Octa's rugged design. A glance reveals a titanium exhaust with quad tips, hinting at the throaty roar of the engine. Flared wheel arches provide ample clearance for large tyres, while the raised suspension ensures the vehicle can conquer even the most uneven terrain. Mud flaps offer additional protection from dirt and debris, and BFGoodrich all-terrain tyres wrapped around 20-inch wheels provide superior grip on any surface.
