The filing confirms the production-ready version of the sub-four-metre SUV, expected to challenge the Maruti Suzuki Jimny when it launches next year.

Mahindra & Mahindra has filed a design registration with the Indian patent office for the production version of its Vision S SUV, offering the clearest look yet at how the sub-four-metre model will appear when it reaches showrooms. The filing, lodged with the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks, shows a vehicle that closely mirrors the concept Mahindra unveiled on Independence Day last year.

The images reveal a boxy, upright silhouette with minimal curves, continuing the rugged design language first seen on the Vision S concept. The headlamps appear squared off, with a single horizontal slat running outward, while the front grille carries vertical slats set above a chunky bumper. Short overhangs, a flat roofline and flush-fitting door handles — all carried over from the concept — point to a design brief built around road presence rather than outright urban polish.

Mahindra has not disclosed powertrain details for the production model, though the SUV is expected to sit on the company's new NU_IQ platform, a modular architecture designed to accommodate petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric options. The platform's flexibility, spanning lengths of roughly 3,990mm to 4,320mm, allows Mahindra to position variants across the sub-four-metre bracket while keeping underlying engineering common.

The production SUV is widely expected to arrive in the market in 2027, slotting into Mahindra's line-up above the XUV 3XO. Its styling — a tailgate-mounted spare wheel, flared wheel arches, and a stance that borrows visibly from the Thar and Scorpio — signals an unambiguous pitch at buyers who want a compact SUV with genuine off-road character, rather than the soft-roader proportions that dominate the segment today.

That positioning puts the car on a collision course with the Maruti Suzuki Jimny, currently the only mainstream sub-four-metre SUV in India built around a ladder-frame approach to off-road capability. The segment is also drawing fresh entrants: Renault's Bridger concept and Tata's rumoured Scarlet point to a broader shift among manufacturers towards rugged, go-anywhere styling within the compact SUV bracket, which continues to account for the bulk of India's passenger SUV sales.

For Mahindra, the stakes are significant. The company has built its recent growth substantially on SUV volumes, and a credible lifestyle offering in the sub-four-metre space — a segment it has historically ceded ground in — would round out a portfolio that already spans the Thar, Scorpio and XUV range. Whether the production car retains the concept's 4x4 ambitions, or leans more towards front-wheel-drive variants for cost reasons, remains to be confirmed.

With design registration now in place, Mahindra appears to be moving towards a formal unveiling, though the company has yet to confirm a specific launch window beyond the widely reported 2027 timeline. Pricing and a production name have not been announced.
