Mahindra XUV 7XO Gets Five-Star Bharat NCAP Safety Score

Mahindra's XUV 7XO has recorded a five-star rating for both adult and child occupant protection in Bharat NCAP crash tests. Mahindra's own launch communication had described the SUV only as "engineered to achieve" a five-star rating, and now the official result has been confirmed.

The official BNCAP fact sheet lists the XUV 7XO's AX7 diesel two-wheel-drive and AX7L diesel four-wheel-drive seven-seat variants as the ones tested, achieving scores of 30.76 out of 32 for Adult Occupant Protection and 44.97 out of 49 for Child Occupant Protection. The vehicle was tested at a crash weight of 2,059kg. 

In the frontal offset deformable barrier test it scored 14.76 out of 16, and it also achieved the maximum 16 out of 16 points in the side movable deformable barrier test, with the side pole impact test marked "OK". Damage to the crash test dummies was not rated poorer than "adequate" for any body part in any test. 

The five-star rating, per the document's annexure, applies across 36 variants of the XUV 7XO — from the base AX to the top-spec AX7L — in both petrol and diesel, manual and automatic, and also four-wheel-drive options. BNCAP testing was carried out under India's AIS-197 standard.

Standard equipment across the Mahindra XUV 7XO range includes dual front airbags, side head-curtain airbags, side chest and pelvis airbags for front occupants, electronic stability control, pedestrian protection and seatbelt reminders on all seats. A knee airbag remains optional. ISOFIX and i-Size child-seat anchors are standard at the second row.

These adult and child safety scores place the XUV 7XO among the stronger performers in its class, ahead of the Tata Safari and Harrier (30.08/44.54) and broadly in line with the Toyota Innova Hycross (30.47/45). The XUV 7XO does slightly trail Mahindra's own Thar Roxx (31.09/45), BE 6 (31.97/45) and XEV 9e (32/45) — but also qualifies for confirmed five-star Bharat NCAP ratings.

The XUV 7XO, launched on 5 January 2026, is the facelifted version of the XUV700, which had previously held a five-star adult, four-star child rating under Global NCAP. Mahindra has said the SUV carries over the XUV700's 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engines.

Bharat NCAP, run by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways since October 2023, has certified more than 30 models to date. Union minister Nitin Gadkari told the SIAM Annual Convention this month that testing in India costs a fraction of comparable Global NCAP assessments, and that a stricter Bharat NCAP 2.0 framework is due from October 2027.
