While SUVs remained the more popular choice in 2025, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire turned out to be the more proven purchase for customers, especially family buyers.
The Maruti Suzuki Dzire bucked the trend to emerge as the top-selling car in the 2025 calendar year. The automaker sold 2.14 lakh units of the Dzire last year, even as SUVs remained the preferred choice for consumers. SUVs contributed about 30 per cent to Maruti’s total sales, up from 25.9 per cent earlier, while the body style held a share of over 55 per cent in the total passenger vehicle market. Notably, the Tata Punch subcompact SUV was the bestselling car in CY2024 with over 2.02 lakh units sold.

Do note the 2.14 lakh figure comprises both private and fleet sales. The Maruti Suzuki Dzire continues to be a popular buy among family buyers, while being equally popular among fleet operators under the Tour S name. What has worked in the Dzire’s favour is its strong fundamentals addressing the needs of the family buyer. The new-generation model arrived in later 2024, further keeping the model relevant in the market and creating a distinct identity over the Swift hatchback. It’s also noteworthy to mention that the new-gen Dzire manages to comfortably outsell its immediate rivals - Hyundai Aura and new-generation Honda Amaze - in the segment.
While the Maruti Suzuki Dzire was the top-seller of the year, the second-bestselling car was the Hyundai Creta. The Korean carmaker sold 2.01 units of the compact SUV, a personal best for the model. Coming in a close third was the Tata Nexon that also sold nearly 2.01 lakh units in the 2025 calendar year. The Maruti Suzuki WagonR and Ertiga took the fourth and fifth spots with 1.94 lakh and 1.92 lakh units sold respectively. The Tata Punch was relegated to the 10th spot with 1.73 lakh units sold last year. With a facelift in the works for the micro SUV, the Punch is expected to see a boost in figures this year.
