The update will lead to a marginal price hike — 1.4% for the Ertiga and 0.5% for the Baleno.
Maruti Suzuki has announced a key safety upgrade for two of its best-selling models, the Ertiga and the Baleno. Starting July 16, 2025, both the MPV and premium hatchback will come equipped with six airbags as standard across all variants. Additionally, the enhancement will result in a marginal increase in their ex-showroom prices as the Ertiga will see a 1.4 per cent price hike, while the Baleno will get a 0.5 per cent revision. Currently, the Ertiga is priced between ₹8.96 lakh and ₹13.25 lakh, and the Baleno ranges from ₹6.70 lakh to ₹9.92 lakh (all prices ex-showroom, India). Maruti’s announcement follows closely on the heels of Toyota equipping its Glanza hatchback with six airbags as standard.

The availability of six airbags as standard in these high-selling models is part of Maruti Suzuki’s broader safety initiative. The automaker has committed to offering six airbags as a standard feature across all its passenger vehicle models by the end of 2025. With this update, the Ertiga and Baleno join a growing list of Maruti Suzuki models that already offer six airbags across variants, including the Alto K10, Celerio, WagonR, Eeco, Swift, Dzire, Brezza, Grand Vitara, Jimny, and Invicto. The move also highlights the fact that the Baleno recently received 4 stars at BNCAP for adult safety and 3 stars for child safety.

This shift comes against the backdrop of tightening vehicle safety norms in India. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has mandated that all new passenger vehicles must come equipped with six airbags by October 2025. While this regulation is yet to come into full effect, manufacturers have already begun aligning their product portfolios to meet the upcoming safety standards.

Beyond regulation, customer demand has also been a key driver behind the shift. Buyers today are increasingly aware of crash test ratings and the presence of key safety features, which are becoming an important consideration even in budget and mid-range vehicles. Features such as Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Anti-lock Braking Systems (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), ISOFIX child seat mounts, and now six airbags are quickly becoming standard, reversing the earlier trend where such equipment was largely limited to higher-end variants.
