The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R, one of the most popular cars in India, has received a rating of 1 star in the latest round of Global NCAP crash tests. The test, as usual, was conducted on the base variant of the car came with dual airbags, seat belt pretensioners and ABS.
The Wagon R scored 19.69 points out of a maximum of 34 in adult occupant protection. The protection offered to the driver’s head was adequate and the passenger’s head was good. The neck region of the driver and passenger were well protected but the driver's chest area showed weak protection and the passenger’s chest area showed adequate protection.
The driver’s and passenger’s knees showed marginal protection as they can impact dangerous structures behind the fascia. Both the footwell area and the bodyshell were rated as unstable.
On the child occupant front, the Wagon R scored 3.40 out of a possible 49. getting zero stars for this. ISOFIX seat mounts are not standard on the car and points were lost because of this too. The child seat for the 3-year-old was installed facing forward using the adult seatbelt. This was not able to prevent excessive forward movement during the impact exposing the head to a high risk of injuries. The 18-month-old CRS was installed using the adult seatbelt RWF showing high risk for the head and weak protection to the chest.
The Wagon R also does not have 3-point seatbelts at the rear for which it scored zero points.
The Global NCAP crash tests evaluate the safety of cars by simulating real-life accident scenarios. The tests focus on assessing the car's structural integrity, occupant protection, and the effectiveness of its safety features.
The low rating of the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R is particularly concerning given that it is a popular car in India and other countries.
