Weeks after showcasing the new GranCabrio, Maserati has unveiled its all-electric version called the GranCabrio Folgore. With this new convertible electric sports car, Maserati has three all-electric models in its lineup including the GranTurismo Folgore and Grecale Folgore.
Apart from the convertible roof, the GranCabrio Folgore is essentially identical to the GranTurismo Folgore. It gets the same, squarish headlamps flanking a large grille that houses the brand’s iconic Trident logo. The GranCabrio gets the same three-spoke design for the Folgore-specific design wheels and Folgore badging on the fenders.
Maserati says the top can be operated at speeds of up to 50 kmph. It takes 14 seconds for the roof the fold down and 16 seconds for the top to go back up. It also gets a neck warming system as standard, which is mounted in the seats.
Inside as well, the design remains unchanged compared to the GranTurismo Folgore. It still gets a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, an 8.8-inch secondary screen in the centre console and a 12.2-inch digital instrument cluster. Like all Maseratis, the GranCabrio Folgore also gets a clock in the middle of the dashboard, but like its modern siblings, it is a small digital display that can be customised to have various displays.
Powering the GranCabrio Folgore is the same T-shaped battery pack as its hard-top sibling. It still gets a 92.5 kWh battery pack that gives it a range of up to 447 km on a single charge. Maserati claims that the battery can be charged from 20-80 per cent in 18 minutes using a 270 kW DC fast charger. The convertible also gets a triple-motor, all-wheel drive setup that churns out a healthy 751 bhp (818 bhp with MaxBoost mode) and 1,350 Nm. It can do the 0-100 kmph sprint in 2.8 seconds and has a top speed of 290 kmph.
The Folgore gets four drive modes – Max Range, GT, Sport and Corsa – which can be selected via a knob on the steering wheel. As the name suggests, the Max Range mode is designed to maximise the range and make the car more efficient. This mode reduces the top speed to only 130 kmph, reducing the response from the accelerator pedal and limiting the power of the HVAC system. While GT is the default mode and only allows 80 per cent of the power to be used, the Sport and Corsa modes allow the driver to use all of the power and improve the driving experience.
Maserati’s GranCabrio Folgore is one of the very few convertible electric cars available globally. There is the MG Cyberster, which is expected to launch in India soon, as well as the Fiat 500e Cabrio (and its Abarth version), the Mini Electric convertible and the Pininfarina B95.
