Matter’s efforts have been recognised at the national level, including receiving the ‘Best Patents Portfolio in the Start-up Category’ award from the Confederation of Indian Industry in 2024.
Ahmedabad-based electric mobility startup Matter has reached a notable milestone, crossing 100 granted patents in the electric two-wheeler segment. With over 400 patent filings spanning multiple domains, the company is positioning itself as one of India’s most innovation-driven EV startups, reflecting a strong focus on deep-tech development rather than assembly-led manufacturing.
Matter says it focuses on solving core challenges specific to Indian riding conditions. These include managing thermal safety in extreme climates, improving rider control in electric drivetrains, and enhancing energy efficiency for everyday commuting.
Speaking on this occasion, Mohal Lalbhai, CEO, Matter, said, “Surpassing 100 granted patents demonstrates that India can lead in original EV innovation. We are not adapting existing platforms, but building technology that redefines how electric motorcycles perform, feel, and deliver value to riders.”
The company’s approach combines mechanical engineering, power electronics, and software intelligence into an integrated ecosystem. This full-stack strategy is evident in its flagship electric motorcycle, Aera, which incorporates several patented technologies directly into real-world applications.

Matter’s innovation is not confined to laboratories. In 2025 alone, Aera riders collectively clocked over 21 lakh kilometres across 1.37 lakh rides. The motorcycles operated across a wide temperature range — from as low as 3°C to as high as 48°C — demonstrating reliability in diverse Indian conditions.
These rides also generated more than 56 lakh gear shifts, feeding a continuous data loop that helps refine drivetrain performance, thermal systems, and energy optimisation.
In terms of performance, the Aera delivers a top speed of 124 kmph and accelerates from 0 to 60 kmph in 4.2 seconds. It also supports lean angles of up to 59 degrees. On the efficiency front, riders have reported journeys of up to 182 km on a single ride, with in-house hypermiling extending that figure to 226 km.
Beyond performance metrics, Matter highlights cost efficiency as a key advantage. According to the company, riders can save up to ₹65,000 annually, underlining the practical value of its innovations in everyday usage. This balance between performance, efficiency, and cost savings is central to Matter’s product philosophy, especially in a market where affordability and reliability remain critical decision factors.

A key highlight of Matter’s strategy is its high patent conversion ratio, indicating that a significant portion of its filings are successfully granted. This reflects both the technical depth of its innovations and the defensibility of its intellectual property.

The company continues to expand its patent portfolio across motors, battery intelligence, thermal systems, transmission engineering, and AI-driven vehicle control. Its efforts have also been recognised at the national level, including receiving the ‘Best Patents Portfolio in the Start-up Category’ award from the Confederation of Indian Industry in 2024.
One of Matter’s differentiating innovations is its geared electric powertrain, which aims to bring back rider engagement often missing in conventional EVs. By combining this with advanced control systems, the company is attempting to merge the thrill of traditional motorcycling with the efficiency of electric mobility.
