The AMG version of the latest-gen Mercedes E-Class will feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain.
Mercedes-Benz India is set to expand its performance line-up with the official launch of the new Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid 4Matic+ on July 23, 2026. Making a return to the Indian market, the high-performance sedan moves away from previous mild-hybrid configurations to adopt a comprehensive plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain.
The mechanical layout of the new E 53 combines a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder petrol engine (developing 444 bhp on its own) with a 161 bhp electric motor integrated directly into the 9-speed automatic gearbox. Working in tandem, the combined system generates a standard output of 580 bhp and 750 Nm of torque sent to all four wheels via the AMG Performance 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system.
On the electric side of the equation, the PHEV platform carries a rear-mounted 21.2 kWh usable battery pack. The high-voltage cell provides a claimed pure-electric driving range of over 100 km on a full charge and allows the vehicle to travel at speeds up to 140 km/h in pure EV mode. The electrical grid system supports standard 11 kW AC charging protocols.

In international markets, the model also supports 60 kW DC fast-charging infrastructure, capable of refuelling the battery from 10% to 80% in approximately 20 minutes. The performance brakes have been heavily optimised to handle the energy recuperation cycles alongside regular friction stops.
To handle the additional mass of the high-voltage battery architecture while maintaining signature sports-sedan dynamics, Mercedes has made several AMG-specific structural modifications to the underlying E-Class chassis. These enhancements include heavy axle bracing at both ends, an 11mm wider front track, and an advanced adaptive suspension system with distinct Comfort, Sport, and Sport Plus damping maps.
Visually, the model separates itself from the standard standard-wheelbase E-Class with a glowing, illuminated AMG radiator grille, enlarged front air scoops, flared front fenders, extended side skirts, a rear trunk-lid ducktail spoiler, a modified diffuser element, and circular quad exhaust tips.
