Mercedes-Benz AMG E 53 Hybrid Launched in India at ₹1.45 Crore: First Electrified E-Class for India

Mercedes-Benz India has launched the Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid 4MATIC+, the first electrified AMG variant of its E-Class sedan for the Indian market. The car is offered in Performance and Racing editions, priced at ₹1.45 crore and ₹1.48 crore respectively (ex-showroom), with deliveries beginning immediately through dealerships across the country.

The E 53 Hybrid pairs a 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder turbocharged engine, producing 330 kW (449 hp) on its own, with a 120 kW electric motor built into the nine-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT transmission. Together they deliver a system output of 430 kW (585 bhp) and 750 Nm of torque, rising to 450 kW (612 bhp) with the RACE START launch function. Mercedes-Benz says the sedan accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds, with top speed capped at 250 km/h, extendable to 280 km/h with an optional package.

What sets this AMG apart from its petrol-only siblings is a 400-volt battery with 28.6 kWh gross capacity, enabling an electric-only range of over 100 km on the WLTP cycle at speeds up to 140 kmph. An 11 kW onboard charger is standard. The car also gets AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive, active rear-axle steering, and drive modes including two hybrid-specific settings, "Electric" and "Battery Hold," alongside the familiar AMG Dynamic Select programmes.

Santosh Iyer, Managing Director and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India, said the E-Class remains among the longest-running nameplates in the Indian luxury car market, and that the hybrid AMG variant reflects the company's "powertrain agnostic" strategy, letting customers pick a powertrain suited to their needs rather than pushing a single technology path.

The launch fits a broader pattern in India's luxury car segment, where manufacturers are widening powertrain choices rather than betting solely on full electrification. Mercedes-Benz already sells petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid and fully electric models domestically, and the E 53 Hybrid extends that hybrid push into AMG's performance range for the first time in India. The approach reflects continuing uncertainty around charging infrastructure and duty structures for battery electric vehicles, even as demand for premium SUVs and performance sedans holds steady among affluent buyers.
