Mercedes-Benz has been working on giving its electric vehicles some mind-boggling range. The new CLA with EQ Tech already has a range of up to 792 km (WLTP) on a full charge, and the EQS has a range of 857 km (ARAI). However, Mercedes-Benz did something crazy by giving the EQS sedan a solid-state battery and achieved a range of more than 1200 km on a full charge.
The EQS currently features a lithium-ion battery with a 107.8 kWh capacity, which itself offers a considerable range. Mercedes-Benz didn’t specify the size of the solid-state battery it used for the long-range test but it did say that the EQS equipped with the new battery tech was able to travel from Stuttgart in Germany to Malmö in Sweden without the need to be recharged. It covered a distance of 1205 km, and still had a range of 137 km left.
The solid-state battery has been developed in conjunction with Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains (HPP) and US-based solid-state cell manufacturer Factorial Energy. The battery cells are based on Factorial Electrolyte System Technology (FEST).
Mercedes-Benz said it calculated the optimal route using Electric Intelligence, factoring in the topography, traffic, ambient temperature, and energy needs for heating and cooling – and without using ferries to cover the distance.
Markus Schäfer, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes‑Benz Group AG, Chief Technology Officer, Development & Procurement, said, “The solid-state battery is a true gamechanger for electric mobility. With the successful long-distance drive of the EQS, we show that this technology delivers not only in the lab but also on the road. Our goal is to bring innovations like this into series production by the end of the decade and offer our customers a new level of range and comfort.”
