The G 580 with EQ Tech retains the iconic styling and off-road prowess of the G-Class.
Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Tech is the first launch in India from the brand and is priced at ₹3 crore (ex-showroom, India). It has been launched alongside the EQS 450 SUV, the more affordable version of the EQS 580 SUV that was launched in India last year. The G 580 with EQ Tech is the electric version of the iconic G-Class.
The G 580 with EQ Tech retains the iconic styling of the G-Class but gets some distinctive EV-specific styling elements. The grille has been replaced by a closed-off panel with a bold octagonal, illuminated surround. In the centre is a large version of the Mercedes-Benz’s three-pointed star logo, and it is flanked by two horizontal slats each. The electric G-Class has a different design for alloy wheels compared to the ICE G-Class.
At the rear, the buyers have the option to choose either a tailgate-mounted spare wheel or a square storage box for keeping the charging cables and some tools. Aerodynamic improvements on the electric G-Class include a slightly raised bonnet, air curtains in the rear wheel arches, altered A-pillar cladding, and a new rear spoiler.
The electric G-Class has two 12.3-inch screens, with one for the infotainment and the other for the instrument cluster. The former now runs on Mercedes-Benz’s MBUX operating system, replacing the age-old Command system. Other features include a 360-degree camera, a transparent bonnet, and more.
The G 580 with EQ Tech is powered by three electric motors with a combined output of 580 bhp and 1164 Nm of torque. It can accelerate from 0-100 kmph in 4.7 seconds with a top speed limited to 180 kmph. The electric G-Class has a 116 kWh battery has a claimed range of 473 km (WLTP) on a full charge. With a 200 kW DC charger, the battery can be juiced up in 32 minutes. Furthermore, the battery is integrated into a 4 mm thick steel ladder-frame chassis, ensuring durability.
The electric G-Class lives up to its off-road credentials as it boasts approach, departure, and breakover angles of 32, 30.7, and 20.3 degrees, respectively. It also has a water-wading capacity of up to 850 mm and a ground clearance of 250 mm. There are no direct rivals of the G 580 with EQ Tech as there are no electric off-roaders in the country currently.
